What is the most effective way to get rid of termites once they have come to your home via bark used as mulch?

Boy, that is a tough question. It depends on the type of termite you have (subterranean or drywood) because drywood termites don't need to travel to/from the soil. They can live happily inside your home for years, so fumigation is often recommended. If you have subterranean termites, they live in the soil and travel to/from your home to eat. In that case, a perimeter treatment is often recommended. If you can collect a sample of the termites, you can reach out to your County Extension office for help identifying the species. http://npic.orst.edu/pest/countyext.htm

Professionals have to be licensed specifically for termites before they are allowed to do this kind of work for hire. It requires a lot of specialized knowledge, like how to deal with porches when you're trying to create a continuous perimeter treatment. Please consider getting a professional involved, and make sure that he or she is licensed appropriately.

Thanks for reaching out! There's much more to discuss, but I hope this gets you started down the right path. For more information: http://npic.orst.edu/pest/termite.html
