Woodpecker never seem

Asked April 27, 2014, 8:06 AM EDT

I live in the Mid Atlantic area of the country, just outside of Washington DC. I spotted a bird I had never seem. He was large, bigger than a pigeon, mostly black with some white marking, white head with a red crest, not a red top, a separate red crest. The bird attacked old stump wood, chipping away which I appear to seeking food and not building a nest. Of course it the stumps were on the ground. I stood about a yard away and appear the bird realize that I was there but did not discontinued it activities. I cannot find a picture of the bird in any file?

From your description, we are not certain what you may have seen.
Please take a look at this bird i.d. guide from Cornell Extension. Was it very large? Perhaps a Piliated Woodpecker?
