evergreen trees and retaining walls

What is a good choice for a tall, columnar evergreen tree on the fill side of a tall retaining wall? The site a Southern exposure with some Western shading. How close to the edge of the wall can I plant? I live in Fenton, MO, just south of St Louis.

What is your version of tall? I would recommend using the site mbgplantfinder.com to make your decision. You can enter your parameters in the advanced search and get a list of plants that are made for your specific site. Keep in mind that a large tree would not do well being planted right next to a retaining wall. The roots will be limited on that side. Plant the tree as far away from the wall as it will eventually reach in height.
