What lawn care is needed in mid-April?

Asked April 12, 2014, 4:44 PM EDT

Should I do anything to the lawn right now (4-12-14)? My son wants to put down gypsum and maybe use a roller.

Ramsey County Minnesota

Gypsum does not improve the structure of compacted urban soil, and heavy rolling of the lawn can cause soil compaction. Lawn rolling should be followed by core aeration. Core aeration helps reduce soil compaction, control thatch in lawns, and allow water and fertilizer to move into the root zone. More information on gypsum may be found in the Puyallup Research and Extension Center publication The Myth of Gypsum Magic. The guide Upper Midwest Home Lawn Care for Cool Season Grasses should help you determine the best time to perform various lawn activities.
