What are these holes in my lawn?

As soon as the snow melted - I noticed these holes in my lawn. Any ideas? I have pets & kids - so don't use chemicals on my lawn.

These holes should be accompanied by trails eaten through your grass plants. Not really obvious but made by voles a or mice making a living eating your grasses through the winter. Your lawn should survive but if it appears that it won't rake the injured sod to the side and reseed with an appropriate seed mix for your particular sun/shade mix. The voles/mice were keeping a low profile during the winter to keep from becoming a menu itm for an owl or a hawk Thank for using the Ask an Expert System
