How can I prevent mushrooms from popping up in my yard?

Asked April 9, 2014, 5:34 PM EDT

During the last two summers I have had large mushrooms popping up all over my yard. They will even push up pavers, etc. Is there something I can do to prevent them from reappearing this season?

Thank you for contacting the Master Gardeners with your question on mushrooms. Without knowing the soil conditions in your yard or if there may be tree roots causing the pavers to rise (mushrooms often grow on decaying material below the soil surface), more information is needed to help with your question.

I do have two pages on Colorado State University's Extension Plant Talk that you may read about mushrooms. They are:

Mushrooms in the Home Lawn

Mushrooms and Fairy Rings

Denver Botanic Gardens has an expert on mushrooms, Marylyn Shaw. She will be able to help you identify the mushrooms in your yard and provide more information. You may call her at 303-377-1278.

Please let us know if we may be of further help.
