holes in front yard and field

Asked April 9, 2014, 3:32 PM EDT

Hi, I am trying to figure out what has made hundreds of small holes in our front yard and front and back fields. I talked to the forestry person and he said it would prob. be moles or shrew. I was told to contact PA State Extension for York County.

Hi:
This could be from crows or grackles probing for white grubs (beetle larvae) or possibly nightcrawlers. It is actually aerating the soil, which is a good thing.

That big of a hole is birds?

Hi:
Crows can make nice holes in turf. You can check in the worst area for grubs. Cut back 3 sides of a square foot so that it peels back and dig down into the soil. Grubs may be down a few inches.
