How do I get rid of voles ? At least I think they are voles as they make numerous little brrom handle size breathing holes.
Sussex County Delaware
Hi. Thank you for your question. If you are seeing holes the size of a quarter in your mulch beds, you may have voles. Take a look at the fact sheet links provided below. If you have other questions, please feel free to call the garden helpline at the Sussex County Extension office at 302.856.2585 ext. 535. In the wild, voles forage on native vegetation and provide a valuable food source for predators such as weasels, hawks, and snakes. In home landscapes, voles can cause damage by eating flower bulbs, girdling the stems of woody plants, and gnawing roots. Damaged plants can be more susceptible to diseases or water stress during periods of drought. The following fact sheets will give you information about voles life cycles and control . http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/nreos/wild/wildlife/wdc/voles2.html http://www.extension.org/pages/8677/vole-damage-management#.Uw0Pn_3wvwI http://extension.missouri.edu/p/G9445 (good illustrations)
