Canning Walnut stain

Asked April 4, 2014, 10:40 AM EDT

I just watched a video about making walnut stain to stain lumber by boiling walnuts in water, then soaking overnight and boiling again to get the proper color. The person giving the demonstration said the stain had to be kept in the refrigerator. My question is: could I put the stain in jars and hot water bath the stain let's say for 10 minutes and keep it on my shelf until needed?

Sorry to say I'm not familiar with this process so can't help with this question. I suspect an Extension faculty member in 'walnut country' might be more familiar. See for example information from Malinda Geisler at Iowa State at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/valueaddedag/black-walnuts-iowa.
