Dangeous in compost?

Asked March 30, 2014, 7:10 PM EDT

Enough snow melted in yard to begin raking. Several piles of last year's leafs and winter's dog feces already. Is it dangerous to mix latter into compost heap?

There is no danger. Watch your C:N ratio. Leaves are your carbon source and dog manure is your N source. Mixing with older compost will help break down the new stuff. Hope this helps.

Thank you. Should make good compost.

Try to make sure to keep the pile aerated, the right moisture and C:N ration right to get a good temperature to knock down as many pathogens and parasites as possible. Then turn is a few times to allow it to re heat to a fairly high temperature.

The main reason that we suggest that the pet feces not be composted is to keep other dogs and cats from destroying the pile.
