aloe vera plant

Asked March 30, 2014, 2:40 PM EDT

I have an aloe that has another growing from it-
The mother doesn't seem to be growing and I want to separate them and make two.
Can you advise on how to do this.

Dear Ms Deevy,
Since your aloe doesn't look that large I would pull the plant out of the pot (mother and pup) then pull away as much soil as possible from the area between the pup and mother plant. You should be able to gently pull the base of the pup away from the mother plant or cut it away if you are concerned about tearing (usually they will pull away nicely). Then repot both plants in a cactus soil mix or a 50/50 combination of potting soil and coarse sand (torpedo or builders sand). You want a well draining mix for aloe vera especially for your new plant to root without rotting. Good luck to you and your aloe vera.
