Selection of grass

Asked March 22, 2014, 5:02 PM EDT

We have acreage that we plan to build on. What type of Bermuda grass or other grass would be desirable for the pasture in front of the house. Very little shade with sandy clay. No water system for the grass and cattle will be ranging on it periodically.Thank you-any suggestions would be helpful.

If you are looking for a variety to establish from seed, I would recommend Cheyenne II bermudagrass or Common bermudagrass. Either would be sufficient for grazing of livestock. If you are looking for a bermudagrass that is more productive then I would recommend either Coastal or Tifton 85 bermudagrass. However, both of these varieties have to be established from sprigs. There is a great publication on bermudagrass varieties. It can be located at http://foragefax.tamu.edu under the Publications heading.
