There is nothing you can do to guarantee that your trees won’t get thousand canker disease, but there are a few things that will help your trees have the best chance for success. The most important thing you can do is keep your tree healthy.
· Be careful not to damage the trunk or roots when you’re mowing or doing any planting or construction projects. Don’t use your walnut tree to support a swing or tree house.
Be sure your tree has enough water.
If you have any infected trees remove them promptly and remove all branches, etc. Burning the wood is a good way to get rid of it; but don’t keep it for firewood or transport it unless you remove the bark and the top layer of phloem and cambium. Even though the tree has been cut, the beetles can still emerge and attack another tree.
