What is a good drainage system for raised bed

Asked March 5, 2014, 1:58 PM EST

I would like to install a raised bed on my roughly level concrete patio. Since the bed is just a frame with soil in direct contact with the non-porous patio, will I need a liner or to raise the bed off the surface for adequate drainage? Will a particular soil medium be better for drainage? I plant to grow annual leafy vegetables and herbs.

Thank you.

A liner does not help with drainage but may be desirable to avoid discoloring the concrete patio. You will need to install drainage holes in the raised bed frame to allow water to drain from the soil when it becomes saturated.
