ROTTEN POTATOES

Asked February 17, 2014, 6:50 AM EST

What effect does feeding rotten potatoes have on lactating dairy cows. Will the fungi/bacteria affect the ruminal micro organism populations?? And will there be an effect on milk yield and milk composition???
Looking forward to your response.

It is difficult to say without knowing what kind of fungi are growing on the potatoes. However if the potatoes are extremely decomposed there will be problems with palatability and thus the animals will eat less. This goes to address your question on changes in the microbial population of the rumen. There might be changes if the amount of potatoes eaten is signficant. The fraction that most likely will be affected is milk fat concentration. There might be decreases in milk fat as well as off-flavors depending on the fungi present and the degradation products from their action on the potatoes. Try to limit the intake of these spoiled potatoes to smaller amounts.
