Best lawn with dogs

Asked February 11, 2014, 10:39 AM EST

Hello,We are building a home and will have a large yard - we have 4 female dogs, 2 of which LOVE to play outside & dig in the grass - argh! We hate to confine them in a dog run or restrict their playtime, but also want a pretty lawn! We have considered artificial turf, but the look/cost isn't exactly the best. We are building in Parker, CO - Elbert County - in a development, but where there was all natural vegetation. The yard (with garden areas) will be about 1/2 acre. What type of grass would you recommend that is durable, easy to maintain, and can stand up to all aspects of dog life?Thank you so much,Teri

Hi Teri,I've listed several links to information about different lawn grass types and their advantages and disadvantages. Warm season or native grass types will not hold up well to lots of wear and tear so either Kentuckey bluegrass or a Turf-type tall fescue blend would be better options. It would also be very helpful for you to have a soil test done to find out what/how much ammendments should be added to your soil in preparation of planting your new lawn. You can pick up a soil test kit at the extension office. Let us know if there's any other information you need.http://www.ext.colostate.edu/mg/Gardennotes/561.html

Thank you so much for getting back to me! I will definitely research the links you sent and appreciate the advice on the grass types for our new yard. Teri
