Box elder beetle infestation

Asked February 3, 2014, 6:15 PM EST

These beetles are crawling into my house somehow and getting into everything -- and although my husband insists that they do not bite -- they have on occasion bitten me. How do i rid myself of these horrid little pests?

Boxelder bugs usually get into houses in the fall looking for shelter for winter. They will move from their hiding places into the living spaces. They are for the most part harmless. The best prevention is to stop them from entering the home in the fall during their migration, see http://www.livingwithbugs.com/boxelder.html for a complete description of what's going on plus control info (note, this is my personal site, your Extension office may have additional information).
