lawn choice

Asked January 28, 2014, 11:17 PM EST

I am going to reseed my front yard this spring. What kind should I use? I want the yard to be xeric and low growing, eliminating much of the watering and mowing. Thanks, Joe.

Joe,

Thank you for your question.

Buffalograss is a great choice for a xeric lawn. Unfortunately it is difficult to start from seed. AND you will need to use a great deal of water to get it established. Once the lawn is established is when you can stop watering. I am attaching a link that will help you through it.

Seeded Varieties (will be a mixture of male and female plants)

  • Bison
  • Bowie
  • Cody
  • Plains
  • Topgun
The varieties Texoka and Sharp's Improved will produce a lesser quality lawn. Certain varieties of buffalograss are only available in vegetative form (sod or plugs). Thanks again for your question.
