On-farm slaughter

What is the Michigan stance regarding on-farm slaughter by somebody purchasing livestock from a farm? For example somebody purchasing a goat and wanting to slaughter observing Halal processes and wanting to do the slaughter themselves.

Michigan has a Humane Slaughter of Livestock act. (Additional information available http://www.animallaw.info/statutes/stusmi287_551.htm and http://www.animallaw.info/articles/ovusstatehumaneslaughtertable.htm)

On-farm slaughter is acceptable for custom exempt use under the Federal Meat Inspection Act (http://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsis/topics/rulemaking/federal-meat-inspection-act). This means that the owner of the live animal must use the meat for their own use and their family or non-paying guests use.

There step-by-step guide available for humane Halal on-farm slaughtering. http://sheepgoatmarketing.info/images/HumaneSlaughter.pdf
