Should I use last year's potatoes as seed potatoes?

Asked January 14, 2014, 3:52 PM EST

I am wondering if it is a good idea to plant potatoes this spring that I saved from last year, even though the yield was not that great and in terms of size they were not what they should have been. The Yukon Golds also had some problems with hollow spots in them, but I think that was because of a dry spring. Thanks

Hello, and thanks for using the Ask an Expert System

Since you were not pleased with these potatoes last year I would recommend that you buy new seed potatoes. Given that you put a lot of effort into preparing soil, tending plants combating insects and disease, I think you would want to start with the best seed potatoes that you can get.
