Hydroponics is a technology to grow plants in nutrient solutions with or without a support medium. Those systems with out a support medium are liquid hydroponic systems and those with support are aggregate systems and use things such as sand, gravel, rockwool, perlite, etc as a medium for support. In addition, there are a number of various types of systems in each of these groups. So here are a couple of links to additional information on the basics of hydroponics.
