When should I start tapping maple trees?

Asked January 14, 2014, 10:34 AM EST

Tapping my maple trees (8) for the first time (40 year old trees) this year. What are the typical start/stop tapping dates for Howard County?

Howard County Maryland

Tapping is generally weather related, which makes timing tricker than in the colder parts of the U.S. like New England. Here it is generally late February through early March. There are several places in Maryland that offer maple syruping demonstrations, the closest to you probably is Hashawha Environmental Center in Carroll County. Contact: Bear Branch Nature Center www.hashawha.org. 410-386-3560. Since weather is so important on the timing (and a warm spell can halt it) you should ask them their current predictions. In the past Oregon Ridge in Baltimore County,Brookside Gardens in Montgomery, and other south of you have also done it.
