Strange bird in our neighborhood

Asked January 10, 2014, 10:47 AM EST

We have a very strange bird that is finding refuge from the weather on our porches. He clings to the wall in the corner. He is tucked up into a tight ball so no one can identify him. He has been seen on a few different peoples porches over the past couple of years. Can you identify him? We are very curious.

This is a kind of woodpecker called a Northern Flicker. You can tell by the black tail feathers, black-and-white barred uppertail feathers (coverts), and brown-and-black wing feathers (primaries and secondaries).

Interesting place to spend the night, but it must work for him.
