When should you mow weeds in prairie area?

Asked December 3, 2013, 7:52 PM EST

I have a prairie area at my house that I don't usually do any maintenance to. It has gotten quite weedy with undesirables. I am thinking of mowing it. I am all about drawing nature and insects to my yard, and because of that, it is important to me to have the least amount of impact on those creatures. Is there a better time to mow in this situation?

It is important to mow the undesirable weeds before they go to seed. It may be necessary to mow or selectively remove the undesirables multiple times to reduce the population. It may also be necessary to use a herbicide to burn the weeds back.
