Are there any grants available for small farms?

We have a 23 acre homestead in Molalla and raise hair sheep (St Croix, Katahdin, and crossbreds). We keep around 30 adult animals along with 6 llamas and a horse. Our pastures need to be reseeded in a bad way and are full of lots of Canadian and Bull thistle. We start feeding hay as early as late July/August and through late April. The cost is killing us!

We also are having issues with ancient water lines breaking and are trying to replace them as we can afford. One broken pipe at the barn has been that way for 2 years now and we can't clean one corner of the barn for fear of flooding the barn. It's not sanitary for the animals AT ALL. We spend a fortune in straw to keep it as clean as possible. The water lines are making it tough getting water to the small orchard too. We've lost trees because of summer droughts due to not being able to water out there. Thanks for any help you can give us!

I'm sorry to hear about that. I would contact your local Soil and Water Conservation District. They might know of some USDA funds that could help.

Good luck,
