concern abou mold on drywall

Asked November 18, 2013, 5:49 PM EST

We had a roof leak. It has been fixed but I am concerned that there may be mold forming on the drywall backside. There are some black spot of mold on other parts of the drywall front side.
Should I open a patch and check or is this a wait an see problem?

It may be worth checking the wall cavity to see if there is trapped moisture. You may have to have a building inspector who has a moisture meter than can be inserted in to the building materials to test for moisture levels assist you if you cannot open any portion of the drywall. EPA recommends scrubbing any exposed mold with detergent and water and drying well. Here are some additional guidelines from EPA http://www.epa.gov/mold/moldguide.html

Hope this helps,
