Yes, phosphate is a good fertilizer for alfalfa. In fact, phosphate is the most important fertilizer for alfalfa. New seedings of alfalfa may require as much as 200 lbs. of P2O5 per acre if soil test levels for P are low. Established stands may require as much as 100 lb. of P2O5 per acre. Other nutrients such as potassium and sulfur can be important too, but phosphate is usually the nutrient that must be added when establishing alfalfa.
