mushroom identification

Asked November 11, 2013, 11:36 AM EST

We have a "growth" coming from a crevice in an old oak tree where a bee hive used to be. We are trying to identify it. So far we think it may be Hericium Erinaceus or Hericium Abietis. Could you please help us identify it.

Hello,

We don't have an Extension faculty who is doing mushroom identification at this time. However, the Linn & Benton Master Gardeners have been working with a trained mycologist who has agreed to take on questions about mushrooms. His name is Steve Carpenter and you can email this photo to microbe@pioneer.net. He is not yet in the Ask an Expert System. Please see further instructions in the attached document. Thank you
