What's your opinion of the "Knock Out" roses being sold at the big box stores? Do they provide hips for birds, are they in anyway valuable for wildlife. How do they compare with rugosa roses?

Knock out roses are easier to grow than hybrid tea roses. They do not to much in the way of producing rose hips. Rugosa roses generate lots of rose hips and are probably better for wildlife. If you want to grow roses, Knock Out or rugosa roses would be the better ones to select. http://extension.umd.edu/learn/rose-rose-not-always The important question is what are your requirements in the selection of a shrub? There are many other plants that could be selected. If you are interested in native plants and benefiting wildlife, you might want to look at these publications. http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG120_NativePlantsof...
