Air temperature is used to determine when grass stops growing. Grass blades stop growing when air temperatures reach 40 degrees F (and over 90 degrees). This applies to tall fescue which is the common turf grass of most lawns. If you have a zoysiagrass lawn, it would be different.

Soil temperatures are.the same as the bay waters. If you want to find out the soil temperature, you can go to www.chesapeakelivebuoyobservations
