Missing red leaves this autumn

Asked October 17, 2013, 10:30 AM EDT

I live in Kingston Ontario, very close to Lake Ontario. We have had lots of yellow and orange leaves this fall, but so far no reds. About 50 miles north of us, there are red leaves, apparently. Is this difference due to cooler temperatures further north? Does frost play a role? We have not had frost here yet. Thank you.
