Need details on soaking black walnuts before shelling

We have gathered black walnuts and are trying to follow your instructions in your memo H404B, last reviewed 10/98, Our question is, in the storage section, you mention prior to shelling nuts, to soak them for 24 hours in hot water. Must the water be kept hot for the full 24 hours, or can it cool on its own? We need to know if we have to constantly change the water to keep it hot. Thank you for your attention to this.

You may allow it to cool before redoing the hot water for the last two hours. The idea is to moisten them to keep them from shattering while cracking.
