Pest resistant tree?

Asked October 11, 2013, 3:52 PM EDT

We need a few trees to provide privacy along a public sidewalk. We would like evergreens that will grow thick and tall, but that are also more pest resistant than Leyland Cypress trees (which we planted over the summer, but are now having replaced due to pest damage). What do you recommend? (We live close to the bosque, Mountain and Gabaldon)

Junipers are the best. There are many species and cultivars with a huge variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. They can be sheared or left natural and they will keep their foliage all the way to the ground, which is important for privacy. A good choice for you might be Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum). Many people like that species because the color of most of the cultivars is blue.

Thank you.
