Lack of acorns due to 17 year cicadas?

Asked October 10, 2013, 9:59 AM EDT

Hi. We have several old chestnut oak trees in our yard that don't seem to be producing many acorns this year. The cicadas took off the tips of many branches this summer. Is this impacting the acorn supply? Is the local wildlife (squirrels, deer, bears) going to be affected?

The lack of acorns is probably not related to the Periodical cicadas, oaks have mast years and off years. Did the tree have a lot of twig dieback in the summer from the cicada?
