Care of Chuck Hayes Gardenia
'Chuck Hayes' gardenias are one of the more cold hardy gardenias. They prefer acidic, moist well-drained soil that is high in organic matter. They should be planted in a location where they receive shelter from winter winds and cold. Even though they are winter hardy in Maryland they can still sustain damage in a cold winter. Actually fluctuating winter temperatures for cold to warm (which Maryland is famous for) can also cause damage to the leaves. If necessary come December you can protect them with a burlap barrier. Insert 3-4 wooden stakes into the ground around the circumference of the shrub and then wrap the burlap around them to provide protection.
