when to transplant conifers?

Asked October 3, 2013, 10:39 AM EDT

The previous owners planted four conifers of various kinds in the front yard. The house is too small for such large trees so I'd like to move them to the east side of my property. When is the best time to do this?

Aransas County Texas

The best time to transplant conifers (and just about any plant except palms) is in the fall-whenever the south Texas heat lets up a bit, probably mid-October this year through about December. This gives the plant time to grow and expand its root system for several months that aren't as stressful for it. Water daily just after planting for 2 weeks, then every other day for 2 weeks, then go to a few days between waterings.
