What can I do about layers dying from prolapse?

Asked September 29, 2013, 2:45 AM EDT

My birds (layers) are dying due to prolapse. They are four months in lay. What should I do? I have noticed excess fat in the dead birds. What quantity of protein should a bird consume per day?

There is an article on prolapse in chickens at http://www.extension.org/pages/65423/prolapse-in-poultry-kept-in-small-and-backyard-flocks.

I suspect that your problem is the first on the list, obesity. Laying hens typically receive a diet composed of 14-16% protein.
