How deep do corn roots grow?

Asked September 24, 2013, 8:53 PM EDT

Am interested in knowing maximum depth corn roots typically grow. Also, what weed might have the deepest roots and what would that depth be?

Corn rooting depth varies on soil conditions. Literature says that corn roots can go down over 8 feet. This is not typical. Many corn fields likely have rooting depths of less than 3 feet. If you have a tillage hard pan it might only be 10 inches.

There are a lot of weeds and likely the deepest rooting weed would be a perennial of some sort. I do not know the deepest rooting weed. My weed books do not list rooting depth. Thistles tend to have deep roots and are likely to be among the deepest.
