It is best to stop fertilizing trees, shrubs, roses and perennials after the first part of August, so the plants can harden off for fall and winter. Any new growth will be harmed with cold weather in a few weeks. While annual plants can be fertilized later in the season, they shouldn't need any fertilizer anymore this year.
