How do I get rid of invasive black locust tree seedlings?

Asked September 15, 2013, 8:20 PM EDT

We cut one locust tree and have another uncut. We now have little tufts of locust trees sprouting up along the roots in lawn and around other shrubbery or trees. How can we rid ourselves of these invasive sprouts?

Black locust is quite sensitive to 2,4-D, so any herbicide containing 2,4-D will kill the sprouts. You may have to treat new sprouts for quite a while until the entire root system dies. The fall is a good time to treat since plants translocate to the roots in fall.
