selecting a tree

On a narrow property what trees would be possible that have the least root damage concerns. I'm currently replacing sewer lines and neighbor promises to cut down huge maple trees on property line. (They're also destroying her foundation and threatening mine.) I'd like to offer to plant trees between our houses which are about 25- 30 feet apart. We will greatly miss the benefits of the trees including cooling shade and some privacy screen.

Hi:
If you just want a screen, you could use arborvitae (evergreen if you aren't familiar with them). Without seeing the site, and knowing soil pH, it is hard to recommend a tree. However, avoid maples (as you know), poplars, elm, willows. There are lots of native trees and shrubs that might work. Check out this site:
