How do we check for snakes in a crawl space?

Asked September 10, 2013, 11:20 AM EDT

Two snakes (we think garter) came into our first-floor kitchen last night through an uncovered intake/exhaust vent. The kitchen is built above an enclosed crawl space. We shooed the snakes out the door but are worried that they and others may be nesting in the crawl space. How do we get rid of them? Are companies like "Critter Control" reliable?

You certainly have the option of contacting a nuisance wildlife control company. I am not able to recommend a specific company, but there are many to choose from. Dealing with all kinds of wildlife, snakes included, is part of their job.

As an alternative, here is a fact sheet that offers some options that you might want to do yourself: http://www.icwdm.org/handbook/reptiles/NonpoisonousSnakes.asp.
