Safety of eggs from hens eating medicated chick starter

Asked September 7, 2013, 2:37 PM EDT

We have been feeding our chicks Purina Start & Grow Medicated feed. It contains amprolium. It says to switch chicks to a layer feed 4 weeks before they start laying. We did not do that. They are just starting to lay. Are the eggs safe to eat? And if not, how long do chickens need to be on layer rations before eggs are safe?

Wait 2 weeks after the hens last consumption of amprolium. This is a safe compound, so the 2 weeks is just a precaution. Get the hens on layer feed as soon as possible; they need the calcium for proper eggshell formation.
