Pond coating

Asked September 4, 2013, 7:35 PM EDT

Can u help me identify this coating/algae. Have lived here 25 years and pond has always been nice and clear. Last couple years noticed plant growth increasing. Tried pond dye last year, but growth continued. Bought a pond rake this year. Took a lot out, but now this yellow scum has appeared. See picture. Now have pond aeration system coming. Pond is about 1/4 acres.

PSU has a pond management website, with videos on identifying algae and plants growing in your pond. See:

Dye needs to be added early in order to control growth. Also you need to control nutrients from draining into your pond as much as possible. This includes animals wading into the pond.

Hope that helps,
