Dried up spring

Asked August 31, 2013, 10:45 PM EDT

Hello,
We have a 500 acre ranch just northwest of Steamboat Springs. Since we purchased it in 1981, we have had a spring that supplied all of our water to our home. Recently, it appears to have dried up, as the water supply has significantly dwindled. We can't locate the spring precisely, so have no idea what to do. Is there any help that the CSU Extension office can suggest? Thanks!

With the drought that Colorado is enduring over the last several years, a spring drying up is not surprising. An alternative system to supply water may be needed. In the area that you utilized for you water, is there still moist ground below? You may need to find an area that will allow you to drill a well for future water supplies. It is that or resort to hauling water for the household needs until the spring returns with more normal moisture.
