Encouraging Participation in the National School Lunch Program

Asked August 29, 2013, 9:11 AM EDT

As a pediatrician, I believe the National School Lunch Program provides healthy and nutritious foods to children. What can I do or say to encourage parents to have their children try out the program?

It is important to remember that parents have the ultimate say in the foods they and their children eat at home, so we suggest you approach the topic through this lens. Recognize parents’ concern for their child’s nutrition and then mention that the school lunch program is a great option for lunch. It would be helpful if you were familiar with the menus which can be retrieved from the school’s website.
