Holes in bare dirt

Asked August 23, 2013, 10:44 AM EDT

I have 3 large oaks in m backyard, and therefore no grass, other than the ivies, ferns and ornamentals in beds around the trees. . The rest of the yard is bare dirt . Each morning I find numerous perfectly round "holes" in the dirt about big around as a quarter, and 4 to 6 inches deep. If I rake over these holes and cover them up, the next morning they are there again, larger and deeper. What is living down there???

DOES'NT ANYONE KNOW??? HAVENOT RCVD AN ANSWER.....
