At Kenilworth Mall in northern Towson I noticed a Zelkova serrata tree which had dropped terminal twigs with 3 to 5 leaves on them. See attached pictures. I have never seen such a leaf drop. Please identify the cause. Thank you.

Leaf drop such as you are describing is common this year and is the subject of discussion. The most common suggested cause is that the squirrels are finding fewer acorns this year due to all the rain earlier this year and they are going after zelkovas. There has been no one who has suggested that anything be done about this leaf drop. No insect or disease has been found. It is more leaf drop than usual, but there is nothing that should be done about it. vw
