Cane and Leaf Rust on Silvan Blackberry

Asked August 21, 2013, 2:43 AM EDT

After the harvest I have removed all old and new growth, for it was all infected. Is there any hope for this cultivar or are Silvan very susceptible to Rust? I really like the flavor of this berry or are there any other cultivar that are not so susceptible to this disease and taste as good?

Hello,

Yes, Silvan does have a nice flavor. There are other varieties available (see our cultivar publication: http://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/xmlui/bitstream/handle/1957/19846/ec1617-e.pdf), however, there is relatively little strong information on cultivar diffierences in sensitivity to rust. The reason for this is that these are all predominantly grown and tested in the Willamette Valley -- rust only occurs here in the spring of 1 out of every 5 years or so. I would imagine you might see more leaf disease in your coastal climate.
