What maps are available?

Asked August 19, 2013, 7:49 PM EDT

I am going hiking and ATVing in the UP of MI. I would like to be able to look at a map (or better yet, a GPS) while I am doing this and know that I am not on private property.

There are a few sources that you might consider for your trip. One source of ATV maps is this DNR page: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_15070-38330--,00.html, which has printable PDF maps of various routes and networks. Similar sites by private organizations list trail maps by county: http://www.michigantrails.us/atv-michigan-trail-maps.html or trail name: http://www.riderplanet-usa.com/atv/trails/michigan_list.htm. Another option is the DNR MI Hunt mapping site: http://www.michigan.gov/mihunt. You can use the legend on the left side to turn on (click the check box next to) trails. The nice thing about this site is it shows all public lands accessible throughout the state.

As far as GPS data, I do not know of free coordinates that can be downloaded, but you can purchase such data from a vendor like this one: http://www.vvmapping.com/trails/trailInfoMI.html. Click on 'GPS Maps' in the middle of the page to go to a page where data can be purchased for download.

Enjoy your trip!
